EUPHORIUM_freakestra: 2 Trios & 2 Babies EUPHORIUM 009

Matthias Mainz - trp | Matthias Lorenz - cel | Michael Haves - b | Fabian Niermann - ts | Konrad Grüneberg - b | Oliver Schwerdt - p | Christian Lillinger - dr, perc | Günter Sommer - dr, perc.

The EUPHORIUM_freakestra live in December 2005. On one exciting stage in Leipzig, the creative centre of eastern Germany. At least a home game for the ever transforming ensemble. This time you can experience creative improvised music of young and talented twens, reliable and distinct musicians in their thirties and one legendary grandmaster. The project is about some constellations i.e. personal variations of contemporary chamber jazz. Two drummerless trios meet two drummers.

They sure don’t make revolutions like they used to. Forty-something years ago, knee-jerk hand wringers were tut-tutting about whatever would be left of music after John Cage. Cage’s deep questions, taken in the context of any era, are indeed radical: Is expression necessary if one is to have art? What about authorship? What if all sounds—and silences—had equal worth in a piece of music?

The most daring experimental music is often met with great scepticism. This quartet marvelously represents the paradox of cutting-edge music: the trained ear almost immediately detects an incredible level of focus in the playing and an astounding resourcefulness in obliterating idiosyncratic clichés — yet the common listener hears only scratches and grunts and will most likely call it a con or judge it as not being music at all.

Here is a very nice work of improvisation. «Assemblage» is an ad-hoc ensemble with Ernesto Rodrigues (on violin and viola), Guilherme Rodrigues (on cello and pocket trumpet), Manuel Mota (on electric guitar) and José Oliveira (on percussion, acoustic guitar and inside piano).

They play three compositions (so it says on the cover, but we can safely assume this was all recorded during improvisation) and do this by using objects that are not commonly used to play instruments like this. Thus the result is an assemblage of sound (hence the title). Overall they love small sounds happening all over the place - a small scratch here, a pluck there, some bang inside the piano, slowly building tension in a piece, but there is never a lift-off. Nowhere the procedures explode and erupt in a wall of noise. These four people are rather held-back in their playing, maybe pre-arranged (who knows?) before they started recording, but they cleverly know to keep the tension on the right spot. Well done. After an aseptic and extremely quiet opening, the quartet on «Ficta» expands its horizons into the ethereal world of sound creation. The two Rodrigues string players and the drummer Oliveira are Portuguese musicians, while pianist Paiuk is Argentinean; thus, they bring forth new music concepts from diverse cultures. Their set consists of six experiments in music having an atonal base and fully unstructured composition. The session proceeds tentatively with each artist testing the atmosphere with stark interjections or quiet musings. This in turn invokes periods of spontaneous blurts of temporal duration, which dissolve back to the eerie world of velvety noise. The fifth member of the group is silence.

Pedro Chambel / guitar

Cover layout may have industrial ressemblances and some of the sounds Pedro Chambel’s guitar produces may have, to certain extent, conotations with the so called “industrial music” but the actual cultural pot where this work is to be placed at is quite a different one, namely “Silent Improvisation” the way Sealed Knot or IST produces it.
